Welcome to the Pearson Benefits Website!
The information presented on this site pertains to the
2009
November is American Diabetes Month
- Prior to developing type II diabetes, an individual typically has pre-diabetes (a fasting blood glucose level of 100-125 mg/dL).
- Of the 2,300+ employees screened on National Employee Health & Fitness Day, almost
300 were considered pre-diabetic; fortunately, the onset of type II diabetes can
often be prevented by making lifestyle changes.
- There are usually no symptoms for pre-diabetes and the symptoms for type II diabetes often seem harmless; having a
blood sugar test is the first step in detecting either disease before it’s at an
advanced stage.
- Diabetics who smoke are 3 times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than
diabetics who don’t smoke.
- November is also Lung Cancer Awareness Month; even if you’ve smoked for years,
quitting at any age greatly reduces your risk for developing lung cancer.
- If you’ve never had your blood glucose tested, ask your doctor what’s right for
you based upon your health status and family history.
- Get started today to reduce your risk: one of the best ways to prevent diabetes
is to
lose a little weight.
- Increase your
physical activity: being moderately active 30 minutes per day can make a big
difference.
- Complete your Health Risk Assessment through your health
plan, and get started with online health coaching for weight management, smoking
cessation, or other health areas personalized to your needs.
- Talk to your doctor about the many options available for help with quitting smoking;
remember, Pearson’s prescription plan covers over-the-counter and prescription smoking
cessation products. For more info, visit www.Medco.com.
